1. Introduction

In this guide, you'll learn how to connect additional eero devices to your existing eero mesh network. Mesh networks are made to be expanded in this way to provide WiFi coverage throughout your home. We'll also go over how to remove an eero from your network. You may need to do this if you're troubleshooting an issue, or if you no longer need a particular eero in your home network.

Are all eero devices the same?

While eero likes to refer to their devices as "eeros," there are actually two types of eero devices. The first is the eero Pro router. In order to create an eero mesh network in your home, you must start with an eero Pro router. The pro router creates your wireless network and acts as the foundation of your mesh network. The second type of eero device is the eero Beacon. The Beacon does not come with any Ethernet ports, and is meant to be used specifically as a means to extend WiFi coverage in your home. While the use case for each device is different, set up of these devices is largely similar thanks to the eero app.

2. Proper Placement of Your Eero

While your eero mesh network is made to be expandable, additional eero devices must be placed optimally so that it can extend the original wireless signal properly. Improper placement can lead to poor speeds, intermittent connectivity, or dropped connections altogether. Keep the following do's and don'ts in mind when choosing a location for your eero device:

Do

• Place your new eero halfway between your eero Pro and any existing WiFi dead zones you may have in your home. This way, your new eero can make use of a strong WiFi signal from your eero Pro and then re-broadcast that signal into the problematic areas of your home.
• Place eero devices on a hard, flat surface such as tables, countertops, and night stands. 
• Place eero devices at a height halfway between the floor and the ceiling.
• Place eero devices in an open, non-enclosed environment.
• Place your eero 20-30 feet away from objects:
  
• Microwave oven
• Power lines, power stations, or railroad tracks
• Radio leakage from Direct Satellite Service (DSS)
• Older coaxial cable from certain types of satellite dishes.
• Fluorescent lights
• Bad electrical connections
• Radar

Don't

• Place your eero devices near heavy metal objects such as refrigerators.
• Place anything on top of your eero devices.
• Place your eero devices in an enclosed, small space.
• Place eero devices on chairs, cushions, or any other surface that does not allow for space beneath them to ventilate properly.

Once you've chosen what you feel is the best location for your new eero, plug it in.

3. Add or Remove an Eero

To Add an Eero

1. Open the Eero app.
   

1. Tap Menu.
   

1. Tap Add Eero.
   

1. Tap Next.
   

1. The app will give you some placement advice for your new eero device. Tap Next to continue.
   

1. If it is not already plugged in, plug in your eero device. Tap Next to continue.
   

1. The app will begin searching for your device.
   

1. Once found, the app will perform a placement test to ensure your eero is able to function optimally in its chosen location.
   

1. Once the test has completed successfully, a confirmation screen will appear. Tap Next to continue.
   

1. Next, choose the location your new eero was placed in. This will help you recognize it within the app.
   

1. Your eero will begin the finalization of the set up process.
   

1. Once complete, a confirmation screen will appear. Tap Next to complete the addition of this eero to your network.
   

To Remove an Eero

Keep in mind that removing your main eero will also delete your entire eero network. Removing other eeros may reduce your coverage and cause connectivity issues. 

1. Open the Eero app.
   

1. Tap the Eero you wish to remove from your mesh network.
   

1. Tap Remove Eero.
